Distributed Computing—PowerBuilder Implementation

PowerBuilder provides support for three middle-tier servers:

  • Jaguar Component Transaction Server (CTS)
  • Microsoft Transaction Server (MTS)
  • Distributed PowerBuilder

Powersoft started supporting three/n-tier client/server model since version 5.0 and added more enhancements in version 6.0. PowerBuilder Version 7.0 took to the next higher level by PowerBuilder virtual machine into Jaguar Component Transaction Server and integrating tightly with it. It introduced few things to support this model. In this section, let’s have an overview of all the new objects that are introduced to support distributed computing model. Jaguar CTS/Microsoft Transaction Support will be explained in the later part of this session.

PowerBuilder added the following three new objects to implement distributed computing.

  • Connection Object
  • Transport Object
  • Remote/Proxy Object

PowerBuilder also added the following two events to the Application object to support this model.

  • ConnectionBegin
  • ConnectionEnd

The implementation was further enhanced with the introduction of Transaction pooling and Shared objects and Server push. Let's have an overview of these objects here, explore each of these object properties/events and functions and then implement them.
